Hammam Rituals and Care

WHAT IS

The Turkish hammam experience

When you go to a Turkish bath ("hammam"), you change into a Turkish peştemal towel then enter hot thermal waters which relax your muscles and soften the outer layer of skin. When ready, you make your way to lie down for the event...

Someone puts on a kese mitt and scrubs your body from head to toe, deep exfoliating to remove the outer layer of dead skin, any dirt, flakes, and blotchy spray tans. This full-body exfoliating massage naturally smoothes bumps, improves texture, and loosens ingrown hairs, giving you a full-body massage for a smoother, relaxed, radiant body.

Your body is then covered in luscious soap suds, washing away everything the kese left behind.

This mindful ritual gently assists the natural exfoliation process, revealing the fresher, softer, brighter, smoother skin your body has hidden, giving you a sense of refreshment and your best-feeling touchable skin.

Kese Tips

  • Sweating naturally helps remove impurities from your skin and prepares your body for using a kese. So exercise, get in a sauna, or crank up the water temperature in the shower.
  • Only use your kese with water to keep it in good condition and working effectively. Avoid contact with soap, shampoo, body lotion, etc.
  • Use gently. Your skin should be soft enough for you to exfoliate easily, without heavy pressure. Treat your body kindly.
  • For hygiene, keses should be personal.
  • Use your kese once every 10-15 days, daily use is not recommended.
  • To help with cellulite, you can use your kese more regularly if your skin can tolerate it. Exfoliation works on cellulite appearance by making skin smoother, brightening dull skin, tightening skin, and may assist with lymphatic drainage.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after your kese experience to keep your body hydrated and healthy.

Cleaning a kese

For after each use you can simply rinse it in the shower. If more cleaning needs to be done you can use a gentle soap and warm water in the sink, then rinse clean.

For a deeper clean, we like to put our keses into a delicates bag and throw it into the laundry with our peştemal  towels every few months (ensure you aren't using any harsh detergents, fabric softener or bleach).

Peştemal care, use, and tips

Before first use

Soak your peştemal in cool water for at least 24 hours, then wash normally. This helps release the natural oils and smell, lightening the natural cotton colour, and increasing absorbency and softness. You only need to do this once~

Washing your peştemal

  • Machine wash on a regular cycle with like colours
  • No bleach, no fabric softener. Peştemals become softer the more you use them.
  • Tumble dry on low or hang dry to prevent shrinkage.
Tumble drying will give your peştemal more softness.

Using your pestemal

Peştemals are durable, high-quality, smooth, natural products with a beautiful aesthetic. Peştemals can be used as towels, scarves, sarongs, blankets, table covers, throws, wall textiles, and more.
